Texas Rising: A History Channel Miniseries on the Texas Revolution
Texas Rising is a five-part television miniseries that aired on the History Channel in 2015. It tells the story of how the Texas Rangers were created and how they fought against the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna during the Texas Revolution. The series stars Bill Paxton as Sam Houston, Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Deaf Smith, Olivier Martinez as Santa Anna, and Ray Liotta as Lorca, a fictional Comanche war chief. The series also features Brendan Fraser, Thomas Jane, Crispin Glover, Jeremy Davies, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and Kris Kristofferson in supporting roles.
The series begins after the fall of the Alamo and follows Houston and his army as they retreat eastward to avoid a direct confrontation with Santa Anna. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and allies, such as the Texas Rangers led by Smith and Henry Karnes (Christopher McDonald), Emily West (Addai-Robinson), a former slave who becomes Houston's spy and lover, and Mirabeau Lamar (Chad Michael Murray), a charismatic soldier who clashes with Houston over strategy. The series culminates with the decisive Battle of San Jacinto, where Houston surprises Santa Anna and defeats his army in 18 minutes.
Texas Rising received mixed reviews from critics and viewers. Some praised the production values, the acting, and the historical accuracy of some aspects of the series, while others criticized the script, the pacing, the fictionalization of some events and characters, and the portrayal of Mexicans and Native Americans. Texas Rising was filmed in Durango, Mexico, and was directed by Roland JoffÃ. It was produced by A+E Studios, ITV Studios America, and Thinkfactory Media. The series was written by Leslie Greif, Darrell Fetty, George Nihil, and Rod Hardy. The music was composed by Bruce Broughton and John Debney.
Texas Rising was inspired by the book Texas Rising: The Epic True Story of the Lone Star Republic and the Rise of the Texas Rangers, 1836-1846 by Stephen L. Moore. However, the series deviates from the book and from historical facts in many ways, such as inventing characters, changing timelines, and exaggerating events. For example, Lorca, the Comanche leader who allies with Houston, is a fictional character who does not appear in the book or in history. The series also depicts Santa Anna as a cruel and arrogant dictator who massacres prisoners and rapes women, while Houston is portrayed as a noble and heroic leader who respects his enemies and frees slaves.
The series received a mixed reception from critics and audiences. Some praised the production values, the acting, and the historical accuracy of some aspects of the series, while others criticized the script, the pacing, the fictionalization of some events and characters, and the portrayal of Mexicans and Native Americans. The series has a 19% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews, with an average score of 4.5/10. The site's consensus reads: \\\"Tedious and forgettable, Texas Rising is full of offensive stereotypes and a messy multitude of unfocused characters and narratives.\\\" The series also has a 6.6/10 rating on IMDb based on 4,300 votes.
Texas Rising was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special, Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Limited Series or Movie, and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
